The first U.S. Design Patent USD1S was handwritten, and issued on November 9, 1842, to George Bruce of New York. He was awarded the first design patent (a new form of patent authorized by an Act of Congress) for fonts (printing typefaces and borders). There were no drawings at all! It was a new typeface described in words rather than by claiming the ornamental design.
